Our former Knights Templar stronghold, stretching across the hilltops of Vence, is now transformed into a peaceful refuge steeped in history.
From the Knights Templar
As an historical site dating back to the 12th century, captivating ruins are still plainly visible, bearing witness to the property’s legacy.
The Château Saint-Martin & Spa began as a strategically placed fortified building in Roman times. It was home to Saint-Martin, then Bishop of Tours, in 350 and kept the name.
It was then bequeathed to the Crusaders on their return from Jerusalem, by the Comte de Provence. circa 1 095.
In 1150, the Domaine Saint-Martin became the stronghold of the Knights Templar whose message of faith remains as the Saint-Martin Chapel.
A Polish Count purchases the domain in ruins and begins rebuilding on the foundation of the former Templar Commander’s residence. Traces of the original ruins are still evident on the site.
Fernand Genève, a Parisian businessman, purchases the domain and begins extensive rebuilding.
Genève opens the first hotel on the property.
Six private villas are built to complement the hotel accommodation.
In 1994 the Oetker family acquires the estate.
The building was fully restored and transformed into a luxury hotel.
Château Saint-Martin & Spa receives the prestigious Palace accreditation.
